Digital Signage From a USB Pendrive in Malaysia: When It Works, and When It Quietly Stops
A pendrive in the TV is the cheapest way to run a shop screen, and often the right one. Here is the two minute test, the file rules, what USB cannot do, and the RM cost of each route.
Most small shop screens in Malaysia start with a pendrive in the TV. No account, no app, no monthly fee.
Then a power cut sends the TV back to a broadcast channel, or a "no USB device found" box sits over the counter all breakfast.
Direct answer: a USB pendrive is the right choice when your content changes less than about once a month and one person can walk to the TV whenever it needs touching. Set up properly it costs RM20 to RM40 once and nothing after that, and there is no shame in it.
It becomes the wrong choice once prices move weekly, the menu must switch by itself at 11:30, or you own more than one screen.
The two minute test: can your TV even do this properly?
Start the slideshow, then switch the TV off at the wall socket, wait ten seconds, and switch it back on. That is what a power cut does.
- The slideshow comes back on its own. Your TV has proper USB auto-play, usually a commercial panel or a hidden hotel mode. USB is workable for you.
- It returns to a broadcast channel or the home screen. This is most consumer TVs. Every power cut needs a human with a remote.
- It shows nothing until you re-select the USB source. Same problem, with an extra step for whoever is on shift.
Also turn off the sleep timer and any energy saving mode. A screen that sleeps at 4pm will be blamed on the pendrive for months.
Check the slideshow loops forever. On some brands, repeat is a separate setting.
The file rules that prevent most USB failures
Most pendrive problems are file problems, and all are avoidable.
- Format the drive as FAT32 or exFAT. Many TVs cannot read NTFS, a common Windows default. This is the commonest reason for "no USB device".
- Name the files 01, 02, 03. Most TVs play in filename order, not copy order.
- One folder at the root, nothing nested. Many TVs skip subfolders and may pick up stray files.
- Export images at 1920 x 1080, or 1080 x 1920 for an upright TV. Wrong shape means black bars or blurry prices. Use JPG or PNG.
- For video, use MP4 with H.264 and AAC audio. Cheap TVs silently skip clips they cannot decode.
- Use a small drive, 8GB to 32GB. Large drives index slowly on budget TVs and look like a hang.
- Keep a spare pendrive with the same files. A drive behind a warm TV will die without warning.

The cheapest route is not automatically the right one. Count the walking, not just the money.

A commercial panel is brighter, rated for all day use, and recovers from power cuts by itself. If you never want a monthly bill, it is a fair buy.

The decision rule, in three lines
Answer in order and stop at the first yes.
- Does content change less than once a month, on one screen, with someone on site? Use the pendrive, with the file rules and a spare.
- Do prices or promos move weekly, or should the screen change by time of day? The pendrive will cost more in walking than software costs in ringgit.
- Do you have two screens, or two branches? USB stops being viable.
If you are moving off the pendrive
Your exported files still work. Plug a small Android box into your TV's HDMI port, or use the TV itself if it runs Android or Google TV, then install a signage player.
