How to Put a Canva Design on Your Shop or Cafe TV in Malaysia (Step by Step)

Guide · 6 min read · 2026-07-15

You designed a nice promo or menu in Canva, now it is stuck on your phone. Here are the three real ways to get it onto your shop TV in Malaysia, the honest catch with each, and how to keep it updated without walking over with a pendrive.

You made a clean promo poster or a menu in Canva. It looks good on your phone. Now you want it up on the TV in your shop or cafe, looping all day, and this is where most people get stuck.

The design was the easy part. Getting it onto the screen, and changing it next week without a fuss, is the part nobody explains.

Direct answer: there are three ways to show a Canva design on a TV in Malaysia. Export it and play it off a USB pendrive (simplest, but you walk to the TV for every change). Cast or mirror it from your phone or laptop (fine for a one-off, not for all day).

Or upload it to signage software that plays it on a small player box (best when the design changes often or must run every day, because you update it from your phone and it keeps playing even when the WiFi drops). For a shop that swaps promos or a menu, the software route is the one that actually saves you time.

First, Export Your Canva Design the Right Way

Whichever method you pick, a design exported at the wrong size looks wrong on a TV: black bars around it, or stretched and blurry. Fix this in Canva before you export.

  • Set the canvas shape to match the TV. A normal landscape TV is 1920 x 1080 px. A TV mounted upright (portrait), common for menu boards and price lists, is 1080 x 1920 px. Design at that shape from the start.
  • Export as PNG for a single still. PNG keeps text and prices sharp. Use PDF if you have several pages, or MP4 if your design animates.
  • Make the text bigger than feels right. A layout that reads fine on your phone in your hand is often unreadable from three metres across a shop. Prices and the main offer should be legible from where the customer stands.

The Three Ways to Get It on the TV

Method Best for The catch
USB pendrive One poster that rarely changes You walk to the TV and swap the file for every single change. Not every TV loops images cleanly, and pendrives corrupt.
Cast or screen mirror A quick one-off or a single event Your phone or laptop is tied up, the screen sleeps, and the mirror connection drops. Not built to run all day.
Signage software + small player Anything that changes, or must run every day A small monthly cost plus a player box (RM150 to RM400). In return you change it from your phone and it survives a WiFi drop.

For a promo poster you will replace next month, or a menu whose prices move, the pendrive method quietly becomes the annoying one. Every change means finding a laptop, re-exporting, copying to the pendrive, and walking to the TV. The whole point of a digital screen was to stop doing that.

What Each Method Costs in Malaysia

  • USB pendrive: about RM20 to RM40 for the pendrive, RM0 after that. You still need a TV that can loop images from USB, and many do it poorly.
  • Casting: RM0 if your TV already supports it, but you are giving up a phone or laptop for as long as the screen is on.
  • Signage software: a small Android box costs RM150 to RM400 once, and the software runs from free for a single screen, to RM15 a month for one screen without the watermark or the Layar slide, to RM29 to RM55 per screen per month for scheduling and multi-screen control. No commercial "signage package" or contract is needed for one cafe screen.

Make It Read on a TV, Not on a Phone

A Canva design that wins on a phone can fail on a wall. Keep it simple: one clear message or five to six menu items per screen, big prices, one strong photo instead of many small ones, and enough contrast that it holds up under bright shop lighting. If you are designing a menu specifically, the digital menu board setup guide goes deeper on design rules and daypart scheduling.

The Part People Forget: Keeping It Updated

The design is the easy twenty percent. The other eighty percent is next week, when the price changes, the promo ends, or an item runs out. This is exactly where the method you chose starts to matter.

With a pendrive or casting, every update sends you back to the TV with a device in hand. With signage software, you open your phone, upload the new Canva export, and it is live on the screen in seconds.

You can also schedule ahead: a breakfast promo until 11am, a lunch design after that, a weekend-only bundle that appears on its own. Set it once and forget it, which is the kind of task that otherwise never gets done when the shop is busy.

If you have not set up the player side yet, how to turn any TV into a digital signage screen walks through the hardware step by step. Cafe owners can also see real menu-board setups on the cafe signage page.

Getting It on Screen This Week

Export your Canva design at the right size, plug a small Android box into the TV, install a signage player, and upload the file.

From a finished Canva design to a live screen is an afternoon, most of it the wall mount. Layar's digital signage software runs one screen free with no credit card required, so you can put your Canva promo on the shop TV and update it from your phone before spending anything.
