Your Shop TV Keeps Turning Itself Off: How to Keep a Screen On All Day in Malaysia
Most TVs in Malaysia switch themselves off after four hours with no remote press. Here are the five settings that keep a shop screen on, and what all-day running really costs.
Your shop TV goes black mid afternoon, yet one remote press brings it back. This is the most common shop screen fault in Malaysia, and it is a factory power saving setting.
Direct answer: nearly every TV sold today switches itself off after four hours with no remote button pressed. It is on by default.
Samsung calls it Auto Power Off, LG calls it Auto Power Off under Timers, Sony and Google TV call it Idle TV standby.
Turn that off, plus the no signal timer and the player's screensaver. A 43 inch TV on 12 hours a day costs about RM13 a month, so switch off overnight for panel life, not the bill.
The four hour rule nobody tells you about
After four hours with no button pressed, the TV assumes nobody is watching and shuts down. On at 8am means off by lunch.

Menus move between model years, so look for power, energy, eco or timer. On some LG sets the timer is two hours, not four.
The second timer: no signal power off
No Signal Power Off is separate. It switches the TV off, or to another input, when HDMI goes quiet for 10 to 15 minutes.
After a power dip, a slow player reboot lets it fire, and a broadcast channel ends up over your counter. Switch it off in the same menu.
The screensaver is usually not on the TV
Floating photos or a clock come from the player, not the TV.
- Android box or Android TV. Settings, Device Preferences, Screen saver. Set the screensaver to None, "Start screen saver after" to Never, and "Put device to sleep" to Never. All three matter.
- Windows mini PC. In Power & sleep, set Screen and Sleep to Never on the plugged in column. Then check the screensaver separately under personalisation.
- A laptop being used as the player. Also set "closing the lid does nothing".
HDMI-CEC, the setting that makes your TV do things you did not ask for
CEC (Samsung Anynet+, LG SIMPLINK, Sony Bravia Sync) lets devices control each other over HDMI, so inputs change on their own. On a one-job screen, turn it off.
Test the power cut before it tests you
Power dips are common in Malaysian shoplots. Switch the TV off at the wall, count to ten, and switch it on without the remote.
It should return on the right HDMI input, playing. If not, look for a "Power on behaviour" or "Last state" setting; many cheaper sets lack it.
What it actually costs to leave a TV on
The sum: watts, divided by 1,000, times hours per day, times 30, times your rate per kWh.
A small shop pays around 50 sen per kWh all in. Your own rate is your TNB bill total divided by its kWh.
At 50 sen per kWh, running 12 hours a day, 30 days:

Real wattage is on the back sticker. Full brightness can draw half again as much.
A 43 inch screen and player cost roughly RM14 a month at 12 hours a day, or about RM28 at 24 hours.
Then why schedule it off at all?
Panel life. 24 hours instead of 12 roughly doubles panel hours, and the backlight fades. See signage display vs normal TV.
Static images. A logo that never moves risks image retention.
The honest limit: software cannot switch a television off
An app cannot cut mains power; it can only go black. On Windows it can also put most TVs into standby over HDMI. On Android, the TV decides.
Three real ways to switch off on a schedule:

Factory Auto Power Off. Turn it off in the power or eco menu, with No Signal Power Off.
Is it bad to leave a TV on all day?
10 to 14 hours a day is fine. At 24 hours the backlight ages faster, so give it an overnight off window.
How much electricity does a shop TV use in Malaysia?
A 43 inch LED at 70W, 12 hours a day: about 25 kWh, or RM13 a month at 50 sen per kWh. Add about RM1.50 for the player.
My screen goes black but the box is still running. What is it?
Check, one at a time: Auto Power Off, No Signal Power Off, the player's screensaver, its sleep setting, then HDMI-CEC.
Do I need a special commercial TV to run signage all day?
Usually not. Buy commercial for direct sun, near round-the-clock use, or costly failures.
