Layar

Digital menu board software for the TV you already own.

A digital menu board is two things: a screen on the wall, and the software that decides what it shows. Layar is the software half. If the TV is already up, you can start today for nothing and run the board from your phone.

From RM15 per screen, per month

The two ways to buy one, and which suits you

Route one is a hardware package: a supplier quotes the display, the mount, the player box and the labour as a single one-time figure, typically from around RM1,500 for a first screen. That is the right route if you do not have a screen yet or you want somebody to fit it properly. Route two is software on a screen you already own, priced per screen per month. Layar is route two: the first screen is free forever and a live screen with no watermark is RM15 a month, with no setup fee and no contract. Plenty of shops end up doing both, one supplier for the wall and Layar for what plays on it.

It runs on the TV you already own

Any TV with an HDMI port works. Plug in a small Windows mini PC or an Android TV box, install the Layar player, and pair the screen with a code from your dashboard. If the screen is already on the wall, that is the whole setup and it takes an afternoon.

Change a price from behind the counter

Open the dashboard on your phone, change the item, publish. The screen updates without anyone climbing up to unplug a pendrive. This is the part that decides whether a menu board stays current in month three, which is where most of them quietly stop being accurate.

Breakfast, lunch and evening menus switch themselves

Schedule a playlist per time block once. The board shows the breakfast set in the morning, the lunch set at noon and the evening promo after six, with nobody remembering to change it. Weekday and weekend menus work the same way.

What happens when the Wi-Fi drops

Images and video you have published are stored on the player, so the board keeps playing through an internet outage. Be aware of one limit we would rather state than hide: on Android players, a slide built from a live template still needs the connection to draw itself. If your shop has unreliable internet, build the board from images and video.

You find out before your customers do

On the Pro plan Layar sends a WhatsApp message when a screen goes offline, so a dark board at the counter is something you hear about from us rather than from a customer at the till. Screen status is on the dashboard on every plan.

Design it in Canva, or in Layar

Import a Canva design you already have and publish it straight to the screen. If you do not have a designer, AI Studio drafts a poster from a short description and you approve it before anything goes live. Prayer times from official JAKIM data for your zone, weather and QR codes can sit on top of the same board.

No screen yet? Get that part done properly

Layar is the software only, and we do not install anything. If you still need the display supplied, mounted and wired up, that is a hardware job and it is worth having someone do it once, correctly. SmartScheduler covers that side in Malaysia and quotes it as a one-time package.

SmartScheduler, screen supply and installation · Layar runs on whatever screen you end up with, so the two fit together.

Common questions

How much does a digital menu board cost in Malaysia?

It depends which half you are buying. A hardware package with the display, mount and fitting included typically starts near RM1,500 one-time per screen. The software that runs the board is separate: Layar is free for one screen forever, RM15 per month for one live screen with no watermark, RM29 per screen for up to ten screens, and RM55 per screen for unlimited screens with alerts and reporting. Prices are in ringgit and billing is month to month. If you already have a TV, the software is all you need to add.

Do I need to buy a special screen?

No. Any TV or monitor with HDMI works. You add a small Windows mini PC or an Android TV box as the player. Many cafes and restaurants already have both.

Do you come and install it?

No, and that is deliberate. Layar is software you set up yourself: install the player, pair the screen with a code, publish a playlist. If you get stuck you can message a real person on WhatsApp and we will walk you through it.

Can I update the menu from my phone?

Yes. The dashboard works in a phone browser. Change the item or the price, publish, and the screen picks it up.

Does the board keep working if the internet goes down?

Published images and video are stored on the player and keep playing during an outage. One honest exception: on Android players a slide built from a live template needs the connection to render, so build the board from images and video if your connection is unreliable.

Can I run more than one branch?

Yes. Manage every screen across branches from one dashboard and publish to all of them at once, or only to the ones you choose. That starts on the Starter plan.

Can I use my existing Canva menu design?

Yes. Import the Canva design and publish it to the screen as it is. You do not have to rebuild your menu in a new tool.

Is there a contract?

No. Plans are month to month and you can cancel anytime. The free single screen stays free and never asks for a card.
