Digital Signage Goes Blank When the Internet Drops? Why, and How to Stop It
A good signage screen does not go blank when the internet drops. Learn the four real causes, test your own setup in two minutes, and change a screen with no internet.
Short answer: a screen that is set up right should not go blank when the internet drops. The content should be saved on the player and play from there.
The internet is only needed to send changes, not to play what is already there.
A blank screen almost always comes from one of four things: software that streams, a player that lost power, a TV that switched input or went to sleep, or weak WiFi where the TV hangs.
The Four Real Causes
They all look the same from outside. The fix is different for each.
| What you see | Likely cause | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| Black screen or an error, player light on | Software that streams and saves nothing on the player | Unplug the router. If the screen dies within minutes, this is it. |
| No signal, player light off | The player lost power, not the internet | Check the socket and plug. They often come loose when the floor is mopped. |
| TV shows its home screen, a logo or a normal channel | The TV switched HDMI input or a sleep timer kicked in | Press the source button. If your content comes back, it is not the internet. |
| Freezes or goes blank at certain times | Weak WiFi where the TV hangs | Run a speed test on a phone held under the TV. |
Two of these have nothing to do with the internet. Many owners upgrade their internet plan, then find a loose plug or a TV that sleeps at 11pm.
Test It Yourself in Two Minutes
Do it when the shop is closed or quiet, not at lunch.
- Step 1: unplug the router. Not just the WiFi on your phone.
- Step 2: watch the screen for five minutes. Do not touch anything.
- Step 3: judge. Still playing means the setup is right. Black, an error or frozen means the software needs the internet.
- Step 4: plug the router back in. The screen should reconnect on its own, with no manual restart.
Step 4 is the one most people skip. Late-night drops are common in Malaysia, and a restart every morning gets old fast.
Change a Screen With No Internet
Playing is half the story. Sometimes you need to change a price while the line is still down.
In Layar's Local Mode, you use a phone or laptop on the same network. Scan the code on the screen, or open its link in a browser, then type the PIN.
Share a phone's internet now and then (a hotspot), and the screen updates itself.
One Question Before You Buy
Ask the seller: "If the internet goes down completely, what happens to the screen?"
The right answer: it keeps playing the last content and reconnects by itself. "It needs internet" or "it usually does not go down" means walk away.
Ask them to unplug the router in front of you during the demo.
Check WiFi Where the TV Is, Not at the Counter
Full signal at the counter can drop to one bar at a TV six metres away behind a concrete wall.
- Test where the TV will go up. Concrete walls, kitchens and big fridges cut the signal.
- Run a LAN cable if you can. A wired line is far steadier than WiFi, and the cable costs about RM20 to RM50.
- If not, move the router closer or add an extender. A normal extender is about RM60 to RM150.

If Your Screen Is Blank Right Now
Go in this order. Most cases are fixed by step two.
- Check power first. Is the player light on and the plug tight?
- Press the source button on the TV remote. Make sure the TV is on the right HDMI port.
- Turn off the sleep timer and auto power-off in the TV settings.
- Only then check the internet. If the screen goes blank only when the line drops, it is a software problem.
Layar runs one screen free with no credit card, so you can do the unplug-the-router test on a real setup before you spend anything.
